Domestic Animal Management Plan

This Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) has been prepared to provide a strategic framework for Hepburn Shire Council to guide policy direction, service programs, and initiatives and action plans related to animal management during the period 2017-2021.

Council plays an important role in supporting and promoting responsible pet ownership in our community but we all have a role to play. The Community Safety Team has many varied roles within Council, including Animal Management and Local Law enforcement and education is a particularly important component of the role and a major factor in increasing compliance with the legislation.

The DAMP ensures that Council will meet its obligations under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 whilst continuing to use a mix of educational and regulatory approaches to promote the notion of responsible pet ownership and assists transparency to our community about our areas of focus. It aims to integrate best practice in domestic animal management with Council’s priorities for actions to be undertaken through to 2021, including the review of the current local law.
