Council has an ongoing responsibility for the well being of the community and plays and important role in supporting emergency management.

The Emergency Management Act 1986 requires Municipal Councils to have a Municipal Emergency Management Plan (MEMP) that outlines the strategies for how we will prevent, prepare, respond and recover from emergencies within the Shire. Council must appoint a Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee which includes Council representatives, emergency response agencies such as the CFA, SES and VicPol, recovery agencies such as the DHS and Red Cross and local community groups. The committee has the responsibility to develop and maintain the MEMP.
