Council has appointed Hutchinson builders to complete the construction of the Hepburn Hub at The Rex. These works are scheduled to commence early next year and anticipated to be completed six months later in mid-2020.

This exciting project, located in central Daylesford, will deliver both community and Council spaces.

It is intended to be a convenient and vibrant place to visit where people can interact while pursuing these activities.

The community facilities include a library, auditorium, digital co-working space and public toilets. Beyond the library, you will also be able to conveniently access Council’s new customer service centre. Co-locating this centre with Council’s offices will provide a single place for the community to access Council services.

Located on the ground floor of the original Rex Theatre, the Daylesford Library will be the centre of this new facility. It will be an inviting, light and comfortable space and make the most of its grand heritage space. The facility doubles the library area currently available and is intended to provide a modern and accessible space for a range of activities. This includes a number of specialist areas directed at towards children, youth and researchers,  along with those who just want to have a chat or read.

The Community Auditorium is located above the library in the old dress circle of the theatre. It is intended to be used for a variety of activities, including presentations and as a cinema. It is accessible for those with a disability, includes seating for more than 70 patrons.  It is also reinstating the important use of the building as a cinema located directly in Vincent Street. The original balcony has been retained and will provide a space to meet before and after the show, and to purchase snacks from the ticket box.

Located next to the Community Auditorium, the Digital Co-Working Space is a light filled space overlooking Vincent Street. It is intended to provide a home away from the home office. The provision of meeting spaces, shared desks and kitchen facilities allows an opportunity for those working from home to interact and collaborative with others on a part time basis.

The Hepburn Hub at The Rex includes features designed to improve the sustainability of the building and the health of its occupants. These include the introduction of natural light through lightwells reducing the need for artificial lighting and signalling to occupants the changing weather and seasons during the year. The use of hydronic radiator heating and enhanced thermal insulation will minimise heat-loss, gas consumption and energy running costs. More than this, by reusing and recycling The Rex Theatre for use as a community hub, Council has ensured that it will remain a valuable community asset well into its second century, preserving its presence in Vincent Street for many year to come.
