How to Apply

Advertising

Vacancies are advertised in the local media, The Advocate, Ballarat Courier,  and on this website’s Employment Page (Click to view current vacancies).

Each advertisement lists a contact person, and applicants are encouraged to contact them to clarify questions and get a better understanding of the position.

Applications

Applications must be forwarded with a covering letter, a statement addressing the key selection criteria and an up to date resume prior to the advertised closing date. Applications without a statement addressing the key selection criteria or that have been submitted late will not be accepted.

Addressing the key selection criteria

The Position Description should be read very carefully as this describes the core duties and requirements of the position and outlines the criteria used as a basis for selecting the most appropriate person for the job.

Unless specified it is mandatory to address the key selection criteria.

We recommend that rather than stating you can meet the key selection criteria, address each criterion separately. Give specific examples illustrating particular skills which will enable us to determine how you meet the criteria of the position.

Shortlisting

It is important that you address the Key Selection Criteria listed in the Position Description when applying for any position as applicants will be shortlisted based on how well the applicant demonstrates that all the selection criteria and pre-requisites are met. Those shortlisted will be contacted by telephone and an interview date, time and venue organised. Police Check documentation will be provided to interviewees to complete and bring along to their interview.

Applicants who are unsuccessful after an interview will be notified by phone, other unsuccessful candidates will be notified in writing.

Tips on getting through the interview 

  • Come Prepared. Practice some standard interview questions before hand.
  • Research the Hepburn Shire Council, who we are and what we do and our values.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Speak confidently and enthusiastically about your experiences and skills.
  • Listen carefully.
  • Address the key selection criteria in your answers.
  • Make sure your answers are clear and succinct.
  • Be yourself, show professionalism but don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. 

Selection

The interview panel will comprise of a minimum of two people unless otherwise advised. Behavioural inter viewing will be used to  assess your knowledge, skills and capability against the selection criteria and seek clarification of information provided in your application. Certain positions may require fit for job testing to be undertaken. You will be advised of this requirement when you are contacted about the details of the interview.

After the interviews are completed, the Panel will review all information from each applicant and assess which one has best demonstrated that they meet all of the selection criteria and pre-requisites for the position.

Referee checks will be conducted after the interview process is completed.

The preferred applicant will then be offered the position verbally and forwarded an information pack containing a letter of offer, , Position Description, Employee Code of Conduct and other associated documentation required as part of our employment conditions.

The personal information which is supplied to Council in employment applications and accompanying documentation will be used solely for the primary purpose for which it was collected or for purposes that a person may reasonably expect with regards to the processing of such applications. Applicants must understand that the personal information is provided for recruitment purposes and that they may apply to Council for access to and/or amendment of the information.
