The review of Local Law No. 2 is a process that commenced early last year. Consultation sessions were held around the Shire and community feedback was sought prior to preparing the current draft Local Law that was presented to the community over recent months.
The review of the Local Law has generated significant community interest and feedback, which has been formally collected through two separate Section 223 submission processes. We received over 100 submissions and on Monday 16 December 2019, 18 members of the community requested to speak to their submissions at a Special Meeting of Council.
We have received some constructive feedback and Council now has the task of reviewing all submissions and determining what potential changes may be incorporated into the draft. At the Special Meeting of Council several community members requested that a working group be established to develop a new Local Law No. 2. Council met at the conclusion of the Special Council Meeting to debrief and consider the request for a working group. It was decided that while it is not practical for Council to establish a working group to develop the full Local Law, we would be keen to work closely with the community on the policies associated with the Local Law, for example a policy might allow certain types of vegetation to be planted on roadsides in particular circumstances. These policies give the Local Law its practical application and determine the parameters in which the Local Law is applied.
Councillors thank the community for their feedback and look forward to reviewing and assessing all submissions in early 2020.
