Ullina Avenue of Honour replanting

Council will soon be replacing the eight trees that form the Avenue of Honour at Ullina, in the Shire’s west. The trees are suffering from significant stress due to their inability to thrive in the drying environment.  

 

Independent assessments undertaken by expert arborists recommend replacing the trees with more robust and resilient English Elms. These advanced trees are expected to hold their form and continue to thrive for at least the next century. Name plaques have been carefully removed in anticipation of the works and will be stored appropriately and reinstalled upon completion of the plantings. 

 

Acting Mayor, Cr Shirley Cornish, said the Avenue exemplifies the community pride for the bravery and sacrifice of those who left their community to serve in World War 1.

 

“We appreciate the opportunity to improve these living memorials through funding opportunities such as this grant from the Department of Families Fairness and Housing, which amounts to around $30,000.” 

 

Council will manage the project, undertake community engagement and give the new plantings the best chance of success by conducting soil testing and regular soil health treatments, with ongoing monitoring by Council’s Senior Arborist. 

“We are fortunate to have strong community commitment to our many Avenues of Honour across the Shire,” said Cr Cornish. 

 

Replacement works will be undertaken during spring.
