Heatwaves

Heat kills more Australians than any other disaster.

Extreme heat can make existing medical conditions worse and cause a heat-related illness, which may be fatal.  Extreme heat events can also affect community infrastructure such as power supply, public transport and other services.

Heatwaves can affect anybody and cause illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke which can be fatal. The most important things to remember are:

  • Keep cool
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Look after yourself and others
