CALD community

Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) is a term often used to describe people living in Australia who were born overseas, or people living in Australia who have parent(s) or grandparent(s) born overseas, and are predominately from non-English speaking or non-Western countries.

Cultural diversity is valuable for a community, including the different skills, perspectives, traditions, values and experiences these groups and individuals may have.

According to the 2021 census:

  • Just over 22 per cent of the population were born overseas.
  • 18 per cent of the population had both parents born overseas.
  • 12.6 per cent of the population spoke a language other than English at home.

This cultural and linguistic diversity is a great strength for our municipality, but members of CALD communities often don’t enjoy equal access to information and opportunity.
