Hepburn Shire Council awarded two important infrastructure contracts last night for a bridge replacement and intersection realignment in the west of the Shire.

Works to replace the Old Ballarat Road bridge at Evansford will start by August, with Council awarding the construction contract to Ontrack Civil Earthworks Pty Ltd.

The bridge was identified for replacement through condition audits. The works mean the replacement bridge will operate without weight restrictions into the future. The modular bridge design is intended to reduce the time of installation and minimise the disturbance to the waterway.

During construction the bridge will be closed to traffic for around four weeks, with a detour in place via Evansford.

The bridge replacement contract was for a fixed price of just over $507,000 and is funded by Council.

A second contract for works to realign the Kingston Road intersection with Church Parade and Kingston-Allendale Road at Kingston will also begin by August. These works are expected to take around six weeks, with some traffic management in place during that time.

This was the site of a tragic dual fatality in late 2019.

“This accident was an absolute tragedy. The heartbreaking situation impacted so many people both at the time, and to this day - not only family and friends, but also the first responders who arrived on the scene,” said Mayor, Cr Tim Drylie.

Council carried out improvements to the intersection at the time and committed to exploring opportunities to make the site even safer

“Delivering this project will significantly improve the safety of the intersection. We look forward to completing the works and are grateful for funding we have received through the Federal Blackspot program,” said Cr Drylie.

The contract was awarded to Fulton Hogan Industries for just under $320,000 and is wholly funded by the Federal Blackspot program.
