At this week's meeting, Council adopted its Road Management Plan 2025–2029 (the Plan) which defines Council’s role in maintaining the Shire’s roads, footpaths, kerb and channel, drainage, bridges and major culverts.
The Plan provides an overview of Council’s practices in managing its road network in accordance with the Road Management Act 2004. The Plan defines the road assets which Council maintains on behalf of the community, along with the standards and procedures associated with the management and maintenance of that network.
Mayor, Cr Don Henderson, said that the document clearly defines what assets Council is and is not responsible for so that the community is aware of what Council can deliver within its existing resources.
“While Council is responsible for a vast road network, there are many roads and road assets in the Shire that are not our responsibility to maintain. It is important to make this clear so that the community knows where to report issues so that they are resolved efficiently,” said Cr Don Henderson.
Council maintains a significant road and path network, including approximately 588 km of sealed roads, 566 km of unsealed roads, 73 km of paths, 95 km of kerb and channel, 52 km of constructed drainage and 210 bridges and major culverts.
Cr Don Henderson said that the Plan balances available resources, safety and road conditions with Council’s legislative requirements.
“We acknowledge that our resources are finite and that we must be careful and considered in how we maintain our road network. The Plan considers a range of factors in managing these important assets such as risk, community expectation, statutory obligations and value for money,” said Cr Don Henderson.
