At the last local government election, the Hepburn Shire changed from the old ward structure, where a councillor would be elected to represent the part of the Shire in which they lived, to a new ungrouped structure, where councillors are elected to represent all parts of the Shire.
Depending, in part, on where you live in the Shire your view on this might vary. Creswick of course saw four local candidates elected and so they may be well-pleased, but for folk in Yandoit in the north of the Shire they may feel that they lack someone on Council with their interests at heart.
Being a new Councillor, I don’t have lived experience of the old ward structure, but I can say that it mostly seems positive for me. In the context of the monthly Council meetings for instance, matters arising range widely over the Shire rather than focusing on just one region. Also, one of the privileges of being a Councillor is that you receive constant invites to attend meetings and events across the Shire. There is something on most weeks. Attending these events provides invaluable insight into the needs and wants of residents. At the same time, it is great to be a part of a team of seven who all have responsibility for all regions, not just their own little patch.
Inevitably, an important component is the lines of communication between residents and the Council. I urge everyone to reach out to all Councillors no matter where you or they live. All seven have your interests at heart.
