When a councillor raises their hand for a vote on an important matter in the Council Chamber they must consider many different questions. First and foremost is of course the health, happiness and cohesion of the Shire. Each Councillor has their own take on this question, but in no particular order, they must also consider the platform they articulated when they nominated for Council; the needs and wants of those who have directly communicated their views on a matter, and even take an educated guess at the thoughts of those who don't engage in the daily decision making and perhaps didn't vote at the last local government elections. There are a myriad other considerations and complexities; all of which must be thought on in what can sometimes be a fast-moving discussion.

It’s a formidable challenge and not one that any of us take lightly. This is the context in which Councillors look to the community for guidance and input. Not as the last word on any matter but as one of many factors that may be considered. Another source is the daily conversations we have in the supermarket or perhaps at the bus stop or the tip. There are almost as many perspectives as there are residents. It remains the case though that only a tiny percentage of residents contribute ideas and thoughts directly. Democracy is never dull and as always I invite you to reach out for a chat to join the conversation.
