As a Councillor I take my responsibility to represent the needs and interests of the whole Shire very seriously. While some groups and individuals are quite communicative, often it is those with the most genuine need that are the least likely to reach out for a chat, and yet those views are just as important as any other. If you are considering making a tilt for election to local government at the next election in 2028, a good prerequisite is not to value sleep too highly as one finds oneself lying awake ruminating on decisions made or those pending all the time.

Local government is not immune to the escalations we have seen in the cost of everything. Local councils are of course mostly self-funded through rates and, as the cost of everything has gone through the roof, everyone’s capacity to pay has stayed the same or reduced. As costs grow it is inevitable that local councils will have to do less or look to state and federal governments for more help. It’s all too easy for councillors and staff to get caught in the middle of this tension.

Just the same, on the whole, the experience of serving as a representative of the community remains a great honour and a very weighty responsibility. In a small shire like ours, Councillors are very accessible, and only ever a phone call away, so do reach out if there is something that is bugging you. As we don’t have wards anymore, each Councillor has oversight of your community, no matter where you live, so be sure to say hello.
