Hepburn Shire is setting a clear path toward a safer, more connected, and sustainable transport future with the adoption of an Integrated Transport Strategy (ITS).

The long-term strategy, which looks ahead to 2050, will guide Council decision-making on local transport priorities while complementing day-to-day asset management planning.

Mayor, Cr Tony Clark, said that the ITS provides a framework for future upgrades and additions to the Shire’s transport network, ensuring it meets the needs of both current and future generations.

“At its core, the strategy focuses on improving safety for vehicle travel across the Shire while also creating a more balanced and inclusive transport system. This includes planning for enhancements to walking and cycling paths, trails, and safer street crossings within townships,” he said.

The strategy also reinforces Council’s commitment to sustainability by supporting the transition to electric road transport and advocating for improved access to public transport. Ensuring Hepburn Shire receives its fair share of regional and rural transport investment will be a key priority.

“The strategy represents an important step forward for the community. It’s about planning ahead so our transport network works better for everyone, whether you’re driving, walking, or cycling.”

“We want to make it safer and easier for people to move around our towns while also preparing for future changes, including the shift to electric vehicles and growing demand for better public transport options.”

“We know Council can’t do this alone. The strategy strengthens our ability to advocate to state and federal governments to ensure Hepburn Shire gets the investment it deserves,” said Cr Clark.

An implementation plan will be developed over the coming months to bring the strategy to life. This will outline how Council will strengthen its transport data and asset management systems, deliver on-the-ground infrastructure improvements, and advocate to state and federal governments for funding and action.

The strategy positions Hepburn Shire to meet evolving transport needs while supporting safer travel, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.
