Birdie and the shelter

One day, Officer Jay came to see Birdie and Mr Frog. "There's a big storm out at sea," Officer Jay said.

"We would like you to come to the emergency shelter. That way you'll be safe."

Birdie and Mr Frog have to go to an emergency shelter. It’s noisy and crowded in the shelter and Birdie is worried about her home. But she finds out that when she needs help, her friends will always be there.

'Birdie and the shelter' is a story to help young children:

  • learn what an emergency shelter is and why they might have to stay in one
  • understand who will help them at the shelter
  • learn how to have fun when they are not at home
  • work through scary or sad feelings
  • understand that natural disasters end and they will be safe and happy again.
